Mhuri Experts is an Independent Social Work service specialising in working with local authorities, solicitors and independent agencies to assess and support families, children and young people.

As the demographic of families in the UK becomes more racially and ethnically diverse, social work practitioners are encountering issues that are complex and multi-layered.  This includes issues linked to faith and cultural practices as well as parental behaviours that challenge belief systems about parenting norms. These issues make the application of thresholds of harm very challenging for practitioners. It is therefore essential to have social work practitioners from backgrounds as diverse as the population that they are working with. This is especially import for Independent Social Workers (ISWs) who are asked to provide specialist assessments and expert reports as well as give expert opinion to the courts.

Family customs, traditions, values, principles and practices lay at the heart of Black Minority Ethnic (BME) communities and heavily influence parenting practices and as such outcomes for children. ‘Mhuri’ translates to ‘Family’ in the Shona language spoken in regions of Southern Africa; it represents our commitment to producing child focused and holistic family assessments and interventions which take account of the unique factors that are prevalent in each family. Our team of highly experienced and skilled ISWs come from a diverse range of BME communities, as such, they fully understand that there is an array of intersectional factors that are influential in framing the lived experiences of black and ethnic minority children and families who come to the attention of children social care.

Mhuri Experts also specialises in working with children with disabilities and their families. We believe it is important to have experts who can understand and assess the effect of disability and complex health problems on the lives of children and their families.
